Catherine McAuley 9th of february 2021

 On September 29th 1778, in Dublin Ireland, Catherine McAuley was born.

She had two siblings, a brother and a sister. At the age of five years old, in 1783 her father died, and also at the age of ten her mother died in 1788.


Dedicating her life to care for the poor, particularly women, Catherine opened the House of Mercy in 1827.It was a facility built to house and educate poor women. In 1831 Catherine made her profession vows and created the Order of the Sisters of Mercy. They provided clothes and food for the poor. Rich families wanted to help so they gave Catherine money and she would help them get jobs so they could earn money. She travelled to France to learn how to teach in 1827. Mary, Catherine's sister died, then 2 years later in 1829, leaving Catherine as the legal guardian of nine children. In 1836,the Sisters of Mercy started setting up convents across great Britain, including one being founded in London in 1839.
